Wanted: Specialist Volunteers :)

Hello Families and Happy Holidays!

We sincerely hope you've all had a chance to relax and enjoy your holiday with one another. There is still plenty of holiday left :)

I'm just sending out a little request from our handwork specialist, Karen Anway, about coming in to do some volunteering on Fridays. Last semester, a few of you came in on Mondays and Thursdays to help out and this was incredibly helpful to Karen and the children that needed a little extra assistance with their sewing. Looks like they'll be learning some knitting next! If you are interested and available to come in on Fridays from 2:00-3:00, please let me know and we would greatly appreciate it.

On that same note, the students will be doing art work with Jenny Kordosky on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00-3:00. The children are familiar with Jenny and her projects are fun and enticing. If this interests you, just let me know.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Warm wishes,

Would you like to care for Gex for 1 week over break?

Hello Families!

We have a gracious family that will be able to take care of Gex, our beloved bearded dragon, for one week over break. Which means there's one remaining week up for grabs. If you're interested in taking care a super, easy-going reptile over your holiday, just let me know.

Stay warm!

Winter Clothing and Slippers

Hello families!

This is just a friendly reminder to send the following winter items with your children every day:

- jacket
- gloves
- hat
- snow pants
- boots

Also, if your child does not have indoor shoes, please make sure your child brings them from now on.  Tracking in dirty boots does not bode well for a clean classroom.

We will be going to the park tomorrow, so thank you in advance for helping your child come to school feel prepared to play in the cold.

All the best,

LEW Newsletter 12-2-2016

Hello Dearest Families!

A number of the students exclaimed how shocked and excited they are that it is already December! Hoping you're getting excited about the upcoming holiday season as well.  On that note, as a community we put an emphasis on "Giving Back" and one of the traditions that we've begun in LEW around this time of year is to have a book drive. If you have a plethora of children's books laying around, we would highly appreciate it if you could have your children bring 3 or more books to donate to an organization called "Books for Africa." On the last day of school, we'll take a look at all of the books we are giving away and talk about the importance of giving.  Here's a link to their website, in case you're interested in finding out more about the organization and see below for more details.

This week was our final week with Mariann, our embroidery guide. The children have created adorable cushions with their names and designs embroidered into the sides. They've also made journals, coasters, and have left this residency with many different sewing skills like... the running stitch, the chain stitch, couching, overstitching,  blanket stitching, how to thread a needle and tie knots. We're incredibly grateful for the hard work and care that Mariann has put into this residency with the children.

Lessons from this week:

First Years
  • Creating North American Maps
  • Golden Bead Addition
  • Adjectives
  • Amphibians
Second Years
  • Landforms of North America
  • Clock work
  • Fundamental Needs of People writing
  • Poriferans
Third Years
  • Creating their own island, using advanced landforms and water forms
  • Invertebrate Classification
  • 2 Roles of the Adjective
  • Timeline of Humans
  • Abstract subtraction

Reminders and Requests

LEW Book Drive: Please send in books with your children by Wednesday, December 14th.  There will be a bin outside of the classroom where you can drop them off.

Dishwashing Soap: We are running low on dishwashing soap which we need on the regular in the kitchen. If you're feeling generous, please send in a bottle of dishwashing soap with your child.

That's all for now. Have an incredible weekend!

Best wishes,

Picture Day Retakes Tomorrow & Parent Education Tonight

Hello families!

Just sending you a friendly reminder that tomorrow we will have a chance to do retakes for student photos. Also, tonight there will be a great parent education opportunity that will focus on executive functioning. It should be a rich discussion and I hear the instructors will share ways to promote executive functioning at school and at home.

Enjoy the rest of your evening,

LEW Newsletter 11-4-2016

Hello LEW families!

Thank you to all of you that could make it to our work share today! The children were thrilled to share their works with everyone. We also had some curious administrators and directors come in to see what was going on. It was a great feeling to see all of the hard work that the students have done in just these last 9 weeks (!!) and see how seriously they take this work.

  • Classifying geometric solids (cubes, cylinders, prisms, pyramids)
  • Simple classification in science
  • The year and its parts

Upcoming Events and announcements

  • Wednesday, Nov. 9th. - Half Day - We will not be having lunch on Wednesday. Busses will still come to pick up the bus riders, but there will be no Big Canoe Kids Club
  • Thursday, Nov. 10th-Friday Nov. 11th - No School - Parent/Teacher Conferences - In lower elementary we still prefer to just have the conference between parents and teachers, but if you bring your child along, they may read or do a quiet activity in the hallway. If you still need to sign up, please do so by clicking here.
  • Thursday, Nov. 17th 7:15-8:30 - Parent Education Night. The topic will be executive functioning and the role of practical life work across the levels at GRS. Childcare will be provided for ages 3-12.
  • Calling on Spoons, Forks and Knives! It appears that many of our utensils have gone home with students. Common mistake.  If you notice any unfamiliar silverware or happen to have any extra utensils lying around, we would be very happy to receive them :)
  • The importance of healthy lunches - with Halloween still lingering in the air, we understand that there might be a surplus of candy about (maybe).  Please remember that we encourage the children to eat healthy options for lunch in order for their bodies to feel nourished and ready to do big work. Thank you for your support in this :)
Have a wonderful weekend in this wonderful weather!

LEW Newsletter 10-7-2016

Hello on this brisk, Autumn-like afternoon!

We just got back from our adventures at Buttermilk Falls Farm! We harvested carrots, broom corn, and marigolds. We planted garlic and made apple cider. We visited with the animals and we hiked around Buttermilk Falls.  We had incredible chaperones join us (Thank you!) and if you happened to take any pictures, please share them with me :) We'd love to put them on the blog. Also, the coordinators for the Harvest Festival (next Saturday BTW) would love some Fall-themed photos of the kids as well.

Other than our field trip, all of us were working hard on literally very large work this past week.

Erik took each of the grades out to collect different types of leaves and analyze them. They came back with some great specimens. Our lessons included...

For the First Years: lessons on sewing a Globe Pillow, search for 10 and the Snake Game (ask them about this!), Cursive Writing, and analyzing the Parts of a Leaf.

For the Second Years: lessons on Telling Time by 5-minute intervals, Fraction Equivalence (ways to make one-whole, one-half, etc.), analyzing Leaf Margins, and classifying Rocks & Minerals (Ask your child if they can tell you the difference between a rock and a mineral. Thanks again for the donations!)

For the Third Years: lessons on the Protractor and measuring angles, the Fundamental Needs of Humans, and classifying Types of Leaves.  This group also had a tremendous space exhibit where they got to share their projects and their knowledge about their topics. They were very proud of this work and they should be! Check the photos below :)

A few notes:

  • Picture Day: Friday, October 14th. We sent home the envelopes to select and pay for the type of pictures you would like of your child. Please have your child bring in the payment envelope to school by next Friday.
  • Harvest Festival: Saturday, October 15th from 2-5 PM.  Hope you all can make it, especially for the lower elementary folk dance performance!
  • No School - MEA: Thursday, October 20th - Friday, October 21st
  • Save the Date: Lower Elementary is planning a "work share" on Friday, November 4 from 1:30 to 2:45 in the afternoon.  This is a chance for parents to come and do Montessori work with their children.  We are waiting for calendar approval and will send out a final Yes on this event as soon as we get it.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Warm regards,

LEW Newsletter 9-23-2015

Greetings on the second day of Autumn!

Hope to find that you are all doing well.  It truly feels like we're in the groove in our work and in our play.  This week during one of our community meetings, we discussed what is Your Job (students) and what is My Job (guides).  This is a tool we were refer to in order to uphold our classroom beliefs. We've heard that doing the "My Job/Your Job" discussion can be great tool to use at home as well. Here's what the class came up with.

Your Job (Students)
- Stay focused on our work
- Clean when it's time to clean
- Play games that keep us together and that do not separate us
- Eat well and peacefully
- Respect nature, our environment, the materials, and each other.

My Job (Guides)
- Give lessons
- Help students
- Teach
- Help everyone stay safe
- Enforce guidelines
- To help students take care of themselves and others
- Respect nature, our environment, the materials, and each other.

What We're working on...

First years are continuing to work on the concept of time and the passage of time. They are also creating large lists (some as tall as the adults!) filled with nouns - people, places, things.  In science, the first years are classifying and writing about living and nonliving things. In math, the students are "searching for 10" in their addition math fact work.

Second years are creating their own calendars as well as creating line graphs that documents the weather.  They are also reviewing the grammar that they learned from last year and are focusing on the noun family, verb, and prepositions.  In science, the students are writing animal stories and riddles as well as reviewing the 5 vertebrates.

Third years are continuing their focus on planets with rings and are getting excited about an exhibit they plan to create for the class.  They are taking their knowledge of the Four Brothers of mathematics to learning how to +, -, x, / fractions.  In science, they are creating elaborate classification charts and researching about poriferas (sea sponges).

Upcoming Dates

Oct. 7 - All Lower Elementary field trip to Buttermilk Falls Farm in Osceola, WI. More news on this soon!

Oct. 15 - All School Harvest Festival with Lower El Folk Dance Performance!

That's all for now.

It continues to be joy to work with all of your children.

Enjoy your weekend!

LEW Newsletter 9-9-2016

Dear Lower Elementary West Families,

If you don't have time to read this entire email, please just make sure to read the section titled Important dates, reminders, and requests down below.

Congratulations!

To everyone on such an incredible first week. Erik and I feel so grateful to all of the children in this community.  Already we have seen so many children ready to step up as leaders in their work and sharing peace and we have also observed so many instances of genuine kindness from the new first years. As a group we've talked about how each of us has a light inside of us and some days it can be bright or some days it can be quite dim. See if your child can tell you more about this. At any rate, our lights feel pretty bright right now and that means something, especially on a Friday afternoon:)

As a community, we've gone over the norms of the classroom and together we have created these beliefs:
1. Our classroom should look clean and beautiful with decorative art.
2. We should be kind and help one another.
3. We want a classroom that feels safe, comfortable, and peaceful.
4. During work time, we should use a 0 to 2 voice level (your child can tell you what that means).
5. We believe in our work and that we should allow each other to focus on our work.
6. We want peaceful and fun music

This was from a lesson that our whole school has adopted from a program called Real Restitution by Diane Gossen.  We'll write about how we incorporate this work into the community as the year progresses.

What we're working on

Many of the students came into the classroom already knowing what they wanted to study. For instance, the amazon, gems and stones, Nasa, big math work with the stamp game and test tube long division... and many of them got started right away.

In addition to this work the students got the following lessons:

First years are working on practical life, creating a globe, playing a globe tally game and some are even beginning some big research.

Second years have begun their in depth study of volcanoes. They have all started creating their mini volcanoes with the parts labeled.  Next week the students will decide what they want to do this new knowledge... do they want to create a map where all the major volcanoes are around the world? Do they want to study a specific volcano? We'll find out next week.

Third years are diving into their space work and have experimented with the diameter of the planets in our solar system as well as creating their own scale model of the the planets' distance from the sun ( see the picture below). I've told the third years to bring in any resources they have about space as well. ow that their curiosity is turned on high, they'll begin to hear stories about space on the news, the radio, from friends, and we want them to bring that information with them to share with the group!

Important Dates, Reminders, and Requests

Lunch and Water Bottles: Please make sure that your child brings or has access to a healthy and filling lunch with as little sugar as possible. This helps the students feel energized and prepared to do their best work and play. Also, please be sure to send a water bottle with your child every day - it's even better if they can just leave it at school. That way, during recess and park days they will always have easy access to water. We don't always have easy access to a drinking fountain, so water bottles really help.

Calling all shoe boxes! We have some bigger projects coming up and we would really appreciate it if you could donate any shoe boxes that may be laying around the house.

Harvest Festival & Folk Dancing - Oct. 15 @ GRS: Every year the school hosts a harvest festival around this time, but now lower elementary has an extra treat to share with the school community.  We have a new specialist teacher this year and her name is Robin. She has been teaching folk dance all over Minneapolis Public Schools and we feel so honored to have her with us. She will be teaching some folk dances that the students will get to perform at the Harvest Festival, so mark your calendars. It should be a blast!

Volunteering: If you are still interested in volunteering in the classroom, please click here and you can sign up for any empty slots :)

That concludes our first newsletter of the year!  We will try and send you a newsletter each week around this time or over the weekend.

Enjoy your weekend!

LEW Newsletter 5-20-2016

Happy Friday, Everyone!

Well we just got back from our adventure to the farm. We tended to the new animals, we"medicined" the soil, we hiked to Buttermilk Falls, and we gathered pieces plants, sticks, and bones to create a mandala.  Thanks to all the chaperones for all of your support - it was a busy day and you stuck with it! Check out some of the pictures from the day.

Speaking of pictures, I've also attached pictures of the third grade field trip to the Science Museum. We took public transit downtown and everyone had a chance to complete the scavenger hunt. Very proud of this group and all of the work they've done with their Study of the Mississippi River.

Currently, the entire lower elementary is working on their Museum projects and after three sessions I can honestly say that the groups have worked very well to create their exhibits. Ask your child what their exhibit is about and what their display will look like.

In addition to the museum work, first years did a water pollution experiment and learned how to be stewards of the earth by picking up trash around the campus.  They also learned about adverbs and are polishing up the stamp game skills in math.

Second years learned about water filtration and run off. We ended our work with grammar for the year with some fun mad libs and they were captivated by a ancient civilization lesson that Erik gave earlier in the week.

Third years are wrapping up their history project visual aids and will begin their essays soon. They are also completing a parts of speech final and mastering fractions with some challenging fraction work.  On Wednesday they had the chance to go out to the garden with Tami, the A2 science teacher, to learn about different types of roots.

Important Dates

June 3, afternoon: Museum Exhibit, all Lower Elementary.  This culminates a month-long project that small groups from both rooms will be doing together.  Each group will have a display to show in the "museum."  More information to come!

June 6: Trip to Como Pool!  (Already a hot topic of conversation...)

June 8: Parent Appreciation Day, afternoon: Come and feel the appreciation!  It's a party just for you, with a talent show to boot!

June 10: Last day of school, early dismissal

TBD - make up date for first grade como zoo trip. Stay tuned!

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

LEW Newsletter 4-30-2016

Greetings Lower Elementary West Families!

We hope this letter finds you all in good health.  Big thanks to all of you that had conversations about peacemaking with your children.  The students were willing to accept redirection from topics of war and have found other avenues to explore their interests. It takes a village :)

We have multiple events coming up that we wanted to make sure that you could mark in your calendars. We're coming in on our last weeks of school, which completely baffles me, and the end of the year typically brings lots of celebrations and trips that you should all be aware of. First, let's start with what we did this last week:

What we've been working on...

All of the students in lower elementary had the chance to work with the adolescents in planting different seeds in the milk jugs all of you donated. They work as a type of miniature green house for the seedling.  You'll notice the jugs are "planted" near the pickup area. Big thanks to Tami Limberg, one of the adolescent science teachers, for bringing our 2 communities together!

This week, first years were introduced to the history of measurement and used the length of their feet to measure different distances in the classroom. Some really want to measure the entire perimeter of the school! We have also been working on math facts, long division with the stamp game and they began a science experiment with Erik to study and observe the process from seed to plant.

Second years learned to build and classify the 7 triangles of reality, using the geometry sticks material.  They also worked on their math facts and got the chance to teach stamp game division to one another and the first graders.  They are also continuing their work with the Timeline of Life and excited to compile all of their cards and booklets and make shrinky dinks (ask them to explain what these are).

Third years finished writing riddles about different place values in the hierarchical material. They also worked on their math facts.  Erik created an engaging lesson on how to write a paragraph (he's that good, folks) that the kids absolutely enjoyed. The third years are also wrapping up their study of the Mississippi River study in preparation for their field trip to the Mississippi River Exhibit at the Science Museum in 2 weeks. Their history projects are taking shape and we're hoping to see the fruits of all their labor very soon - ask your child what more they to need to accomplish this big work.

Important Dates and Volunteer Opportunities

Friday, May 13th - Third Grade Field Trip to the Science Museum
This is the capstone to all of the studies that the third years have done on the Mississippi River. We still need two chaperones for this event to come join us for this trip.  We will need you from about 8:45 to 12:30.

Friday, May 20th - Lower Elementary Field Trip to Buttermilk Farms
This will be our second trip to this farm this year and we're looking forward to seeing the differences between the farm in fall versus spring. Thanks to all of you that volunteered to chaperone! We will send you details soon.

Friday, May 27th - First Grade Field Trip to Como Zoo
This will be a culminating project for the first years and all of the animal studies they've done over the course of the year.  Erik will need 4-5 chaperones for this trip. Please let us know if you're interested.

Friday, June 3rd - Lower Elementary Museum Project 1:30 - 3:00
This will be our 3rd annual Museum Project in lower elementary.  Students from LEE and LEW will mix into small groups of 5-6 and develop a little museum exhibit based on the group's interests. In the past, groups have developed displays based on dinosaurs, medieval times, greek mythology, inventions, and more.  This will be the last big project of the year and it's a very fun and busy event. Be sure to come and check it out!

Monday, June 6th - All Elementary Field Trip to Como Pool
On June 6th, all elementary students will trek over to Como Pool from 10:00-1:30 to celebrate and have a good old time.  I've attached the permission slip to this trip since we will be needed some contributions to cover the cost of this trip. We will also send the form in next week's Thursday just in case. We still need at least 1 more chaperone for this trip.

Wednesday, June 8th - Parent Appreciation Day 1:30-3:00
This is a day to celebrate and appreciate... YOU! We are incredibly grateful for all of the love and support you've provided this year. Please come and let the children pamper you with love and gifts. We truly enjoy this day.

Flowers for May and June
We've grown used to having fresh flowers in the room. If you're interested in bringing in flowers once a week or once every two weeks until the end of the year, please let me know.

Wish List Items
With many big projects approaching, expect some odd requests for crafty materials. Currently we need:
- Modge podge
- Ticonderoga pencils
- Shoe boxes
- Stay tuned...

Looks like it's truly time to celebrate the closing of this school year. Hope many you will get the chance to join us!

Happy May Day everyone!

LEW Newsletter 4/1/2016

Happy Spring Break!

We hope that all of you get some much-deserved downtime this week as well as some outdoor fun :)

This past week was a whirlwind. iRACE was a huge success (check out the pictures attached to this newsletter). The adolescents did a great job teaching their lessons on fairness and the students really enjoyed the activities they planned. Ask your child about the animal game they had to play out - the point of the game was to get what you needed and to give what you could through communicating as a certain animal. Though it was a blast to watch the students communicate like ducks and cats and cows, they understood how communication is so important in getting what you need, but you can still listen and help one another even if you don't speak the same language.  Thank you to all of you for your delicious dishes and your support in helping this iRACE so wonderful (you can still get your tupperware and dishes, if you haven't had the chance to get them back yet).

Work this week

First years reviewed and classified all five vertebrates. They also worked on their addition math facts and reviewed the following parts of speech: articles, adjectives, nouns, verbs, and prepositions.  They created some fun sentences! The students also did very exciting science experiments that Erik presented. Practically the entire classroom was circled around the platform, watching the reaction of different beans, raisins, and grains and how they react in a jar of club soda.  We ended the week with lessons in symmetry and the students painted pictures, created symmetrical dances and found lines of symmetry in different shapes.

Second years painted beautiful pictures of different types of wild flowers - a perfect spring project. They also reviewed their addition and subtraction facts.  The second years also did a fun science experiment and learned about different liquids and which can mix and which cannot.  We also ended the week with lessons in symmetry and the students painted pictures, created symmetrical dances and found lines of symmetry in different shapes.

Third years are creating flower field guides and are discovering the relationship between multiplication and division. Erik also gathered the third years and allowed the students to choose history topics that they will eventually use to generate research papers. We have students studying Jupiter's moons, prehistoric animals, WWI, the importance of clean water, and more.  This has already generated a ton of interest.  We also ended the week with lessons in symmetry and the students painted pictures, created symmetrical dances and found lines of symmetry in different shapes.

Upcoming dates and volunteer opportunities

MCA for Mathematics - Tuesday, April 12th
Third years will be taking their final MCA test the Tuesday after break (not very kind, we know). The students have been troopers for these exams and we are very proud of their progress.

Field Trip - The Taiko Project at the Ordway - Friday, April 22 @ 10:00
We're looking forward to this trip. Taiko drumming is a mesmerizing art to watch. We're looking for chaperones - 2 to be exact! The trip will start at about 9:50 and we'll return at 12:00. Let us know if you're interested.
